My husband and I are enjoying our first year of “empty-nesting” however in January, he had to step in and help his dad with the famiy business which has kept him quite busy. Instead of semi-retirement, he has found himself working on the road again full time and we are going weeks on end without seeing each other. So much for the empty nest.
We try to steal a weekend away together whenever we can, so this past weekend we met up in New Orleans for a little R & R. We figured we would have a little alone time in a fun city, but had no idea what was in store for us when we arrived. This past weekend was the 30th Anniversary of the French Quarter Festival – an annual event full of musicians, artists, food and fun. The entire French Quarter was opened only to foot traffic and on every block there was something exciting to experience. Stages were set up throughout the Quarter and on the Riverfront and the talent was spectacular. The Jazz musicians were amazing, but my personal favorites, Zydeco had us dancing in the streets and feeling as if we were rooted in the Bayou!
You have to travel to New Orleans to experience it . . . there is no other way to see the weird and the wonderful – a city that has something for all of the senses – colors, music, scents and tastes. The creole culture is something you can never know unless you experience it first hand. As the locals say, “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or “Let the good times roll!”
