Art Challenge: Characters
Journal Prompt: “If you’re going to be weird, be confident about it!” Author Unknown
I know I’m a little weird. I embrace it. There was a time when I tried really hard to hide it, but that was a futile battle. So this week, I feel like I vomited color all over my page. For the most part, my real love of art is in fine details and portraits. Whimsical is hard for me. Really hard. I had to push myself to show my weird side. This page also took me waaaaaay too long to complete. For some reason, I futzed and putzed with it and it literally took all day. And in the end, I’m not really that thrilled with it. If I could do it over (and I probably will one day) I would stop trying so hard. I would break out of the confines of my need to be something or someone else, and just let my FREAK FLAG wave in the air. So here it is, warts and all . . . I can’t hide anything from you guys . . . plus, you never judge me and I love you for that!
Drops and Drips of Liquitex Acrylic Ink. Lots of it!
Somebody is trying to emerge here . . . so I let her out. I used acrylic paint, Neocolor crayons, Montana markers and my graphite pencil. Over and over and over again.
So here she is . . . in all her glory . . . my little freaky side!
The amazing Carla Sonheim is our featured artist this week – you will fall in love with her characters and images, I just want to pick them up and cuddle them! Enjoy!

I love your page – just as it is! It is so free and fun looking! Just like I love you! (And yes, we had very similar ideas!)
oh my she is so so so so cool! I love all that color! I want to let my freak flag fly too!
She is beautiful, Lo! Great colors and she has lovely hair!
OK, this a a favorite page of mine for sure. Not only are the colors amazing in your dripping but the girl and her flag are perfect for flying with their fun encouragement. My Dad always said he would love to paint his house purple with pink spots just so people driving by wouldn’t take life so seriously. He wanted them to laugh. But of course, they would have just hated it and caused him much grief so in his imagination, he always lived in that house but painted our home white. He was a character and I do miss him. My craft room is purple in his honor.
Love this!
I don’t think she "wants" for anything. She’s perfect just the way she is.
She is beautiful. I love the face and it’s shading. The banners are fun too. Bravo
She’s got a lot of personality. Love the bright colors.
