Art Challenge: Storyboard
Journal Prompt: A Week in the Life…
It’s so fun to create story boards to document! They are like little tiny vignettes – stories within a story. For this week’s challenge, I wanted to create a little banner for each day of the week.
I documented the lovely week I had at Anna Maria Island in Florida. The first half of the week, I was with my family, and the second half was spent as retreat/work time with the Art to the 5th Girls! Lucky for me, all of the A5 artists are pros at Photoshop – all, except for me! I have a love/hate relationship with the darn program, but I SO WANT TO learn how to use it. I am an intuitive learner and for some reason, photoshop remains elusive to me. But with a lot of encouragement, patience and LOVE, my girlfriends taught me how to take my challenge idea from my head to the computer and give my vision life!
What I really wanted to document this week, was the BEACH! I think I should have been a mermaid in real life, because I would rather be in the sea or on the sand than anywhere else in the world!
I used my Instagram photos from my Smart Phone and picked one from each day. Using Photoshop, I created banners for every day by adding the photo and a little description of each. I printed each one on plain copier paper because I don’t want to keep adding bulk to my art journal. Keep in mind, all of this was done with instructions, coaching and encouragement from the A5 girls!
Before I added my days of the week to my journal, I painted a simple Beach & Sea & Sky across both pages with acrylic paint. I used a wet sponge and worked quickly to blend the colors into each other.
Once it was all dry, I used a straight-edged ruler to tear out each of the banners so I would have a ragged look. Using washi tape and starting at the bottom of the page, I taped each banner to my journal and overlapped each one. I titled the page with Shell Seeker to commemorate the my week of long walks on the beach, sunsets on the ocean and my toes in the sand. Creating a story board this way also offers a bit of privacy for your journaling.
I’m excited to see how you all document with story boards this week.

I can picture myself looking at this journal page and picking up each day to read just as if I was picking up a beautiful shell while walking along the beach. It is a perfect reflection of your week at the beach – interactive documentation. I get so see something new each time I peek into your journal. Thank you so much.
What a lovely analogy Mary! I look so forward to your comments and your insight every week!
